Root Canal Treatment in Salamander Bay & Nelson Bay, Port Stephens
When a tooth has a crack or decay that has reached the nerve (deep inside the tooth), endodontic treatment—commonly called root canal therapy—is needed to save the tooth. At Cheeky Grin Dental Port Stephens, our dentist Dr Edward Jo has over a decade of experience in general, cosmetic and emergency dentistry.

What Is It?
When decay and bacteria get into the nerve of the tooth, the result is severe pain and infection that, if left untreated, can cause you to lose the tooth. To prevent that, we open the tooth, remove all the infection and decay, place antibacterial medications and then fill the tooth. In most cases, we’ll place a crown as the last step, since a root canal weakens the tooth and leaves it more prone to cracking or breaking if not protected.
What to Expect
Often people come to us with an emergency such as severe pain or swelling. Dr Jo will conduct an examination to determine the cause of the problem and let you know his recommendations for treatment.
In many cases, we can complete your root canal at the same visit. In some instances, treatment will be spread out over a couple of visits. We’ll let you know exactly what to expect in your situation, including costs.
Don’t Wait
If you have a toothache or notice swelling or bleeding of your gums beneath a particular tooth, that’s a sign that something is wrong. Taking care of the problem as quickly as possible can prevent the spread of infection and may mean the difference between saving the tooth and losing it. We have emergency appointments available every day.
