When Is It Necessary to Remove a Tooth?
Advanced gum disease or decay can make it impossible to save a tooth. When a tooth is unhealthy and cannot be saved, or when a tooth threatens another tooth, such as in cases of overcrowding, it may become necessary to remove the tooth.
With the advancements in dental technology and procedures, dental implants often create a stronger tooth than the one there to begin with—making losing a tooth much less traumatic than it has been in the past.
What to Expect
Removing a tooth is not the barbaric experience we’ve all seen in movies. We start with numbing cream, and once that has taken effect, we’ll give you an injection to ensure that you are fully numb throughout the procedure. We’ll wiggle the tooth back and forth to loosen the root and then pull it out. You may feel some pressure, but there won’t be any pain.
In more complex cases, we may have to surgically remove the tooth by dividing it and removing it in separate pieces.
Preparing for Implants
If you want to replace the tooth with an implant, we can prepare the area for the implant at the extraction appointment. In some cases, this can involve adding bone graft material to build up the bone prior to implant surgery. In other cases, we can place the implant on the same day as the extraction. Dr Jo will lay out all your treatment and restoration options and answer any of your questions, so you can make an informed decision about how you want to proceed.
